What Is an Anamorphic Lens — and Do You Actually Need One?

A standard lens squeezes nothing — what the sensor sees is what you get. An anamorphic lens optically squeezes the image sideways (a 1.33x squeeze on both our lenses), so when it's "de-squeezed" back to normal in edit, you get a wider frame, streaking horizontal flares, and that signature oval-shaped background blur. It's not a filter — it's the glass doing it, in-camera.

Freelancers shooting product ads & short films

If your reel needs to look different from every other phone-shot ad in an Instagram feed, the wide flares and oval bokeh do that instantly — it's the fastest way to make a small production look bigger than it is.

Existing Sony FX3 / FX30 owners

You already have the body — the Astra 50mm (FX3, full-frame) or 40mm S35 (FX30, APS-C) is a direct add, not a system change. No new camera, no new mount to learn.

Film & media students / programs

Autofocus anamorphic removes the biggest historical barrier — old anamorphics were manual-focus-only and unforgiving. These two are built to actually work in a run-and-gun student shoot, not just a locked-off tripod setup.

Real order: a Muscat film program built a cinema kit around this lens

One recent order combined a Sony a7R VI, a Sony FX3 cinema camera, a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 Art lens, a Sirui 24mm cine prime — and the Astra 50mm anamorphic, specifically. That's a serious buyer choosing the anamorphic look on purpose, alongside professional stills and cinema gear, not as an afterthought.

FAQ

Do I need a full-frame camera for anamorphic?

No — the 40mm S35 is built specifically for APS-C bodies like the Sony FX30. The Astra 50mm is the full-frame option, for the FX3 and a7-series.

Does autofocus actually work well on these?

Yes — both are genuinely autofocus, which is still new for anamorphic lenses; most anamorphics on the market are manual-focus only.

What does "1.33x squeeze" mean in practice?

The lens optically compresses the image sideways by 1.33x. Your editing software de-squeezes it back out, which is what produces the wider frame and the stretched horizontal flares.

Are these in stock right now?

They're available by order — Sirui anamorphic is a specialty item we bring in per order rather than shelf-stock. Message us on WhatsApp for the current lead time.
