Camera Shutter Count Checker

Free tool — upload a straight-out-of-camera JPEG to read shutter actuations. We read metadata only; your photo is never stored.

🔒 Privacy: Your image is analyzed and deleted immediately. It is never saved on our servers, never logged, and never kept in your browser after the check.

Some cameras (especially Sony and Canon) need a deeper metadata read. If you continue, your photo is uploaded briefly, processed on our server, and deleted immediately. We do not store or log your image.

What is shutter count?

Every time a DSLR or mirrorless camera takes a photo, the shutter mechanism registers one actuation in firmware. Shutter count — also called shutter actuations — is that running total. It is one of the first things buyers check on used cameras in Muscat and worldwide, alongside sensor condition, mount wear, and service history.

Why does shutter count matter when buying a used camera?

A lower count usually means less mechanical wear — but it is not the whole story. A well-maintained pro body with 80,000 actuations may be fine; a neglected entry body with 30,000 actuations and moisture damage may not. Shutter count helps you compare two similar listings and spot suspiciously low numbers on "like new" claims. Always inspect the camera in person or buy from a seller who shows proof.

How do you check shutter count by brand?

Nikon — Shutter count is usually readable from an unedited JPEG via EXIF/MakerNotes. Our tool supports most Nikon DSLRs and Z mirrorless bodies when the file is straight from camera.

Sony — Alpha bodies store actuations in MakerNotes; an unedited JPEG often works, but many files need the advanced check on this page. If both fail, USB/firmware tools or our showroom check apply.

CanonRecent R-series mirrorless and older (pre-2010) DSLRs often embed count in JPEGs. Most Canon DSLRs from 2010–2019 do not — you need Canon service software, EOS Utility, or an in-store read. Do not trust a zero or blank read from a photo on those bodies.

Fujifilm — X-series JPEGs frequently expose actuations in metadata; unedited files work for many models.

Pentax — DSLR JPEGs often include shutter count in MakerNotes.

Panasonic — Not readable from a photo; use the manufacturer's in-camera sequence or visit a dealer.

Smartphones — No mechanical shutter count; this tool is for interchangeable-lens cameras only.

What about cameras with electronic shutters?

Shutter count only measures the mechanical shutter. Photos taken with an electronic or silent shutter do not add to it, so a modern mirrorless camera used mostly in silent mode can show a very low or even zero count after heavy use. Some flagship bodies — including the Nikon Z9 and Sony A9 III — have no mechanical shutter at all, so their count is always zero and is not a measure of wear. (Nikon Z8 is the exception: it keeps a mechanical shutter, so its count is real and readable.) For electronic-shutter cameras, judge condition, sensor, and warranty rather than the number — or bring the camera to our Al Khoud showroom and we'll assess it with you.

Can I check the shutter count on a Nikon Z9 or Sony A9 III?

No — these bodies have no mechanical shutter, so there is no mechanical actuation count to read (it stays at zero). For electronic-shutter cameras, assess condition, sensor, and warranty instead. The Nikon Z8 is the exception: it keeps a mechanical shutter, so its count is readable.

Tips for an accurate online check

  1. Copy the file directly from the memory card — not a chat app download.
  2. Use JPEG or TIFF from the camera; avoid Lightroom "Export for web".
  3. If the count fails, try another photo from the same card.
  4. When buying locally in Oman, ask the seller to meet at SkyOrbits Al Khoud showroom for a verified read before you pay.
