How Many Lenses Do You Actually Need? The Sony E-Mount Lens Guide (2026)

Every Sony and third-party lens we carry for Sony cameras — what each one is best at, and who it is for

How many lenses do you actually need? Fewer than you think.

Sony E-mount lens guide — Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II

Most Sony shooters need two or three lenses, not ten. Start with one standard zoom that covers about 24 to 70mm; add a fast prime such as a 50mm or 85mm for portraits and low light; add a telephoto only if you shoot sport, events or wildlife. Skyorbits carries more than 110 lenses for the Sony E mount — from Sony and from Sigma, Tamron, Viltrox, Sirui, Samyang, Thypoch, TTArtisan and Laowa. This guide sorts them by what you want to shoot: everyday zooms, wide angles, portraits, telephotos, macro, lenses made for Sony's smaller APS-C cameras, and cine lenses for video. Each lens gets one line on what it does best and one on who it suits. Sony's G Master (GM) lenses sit at the top of its range; third-party lenses add more choices for every job. Prices and live availability are on each product page.

The short answer

  • First lens: a standard zoom — the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II, or the Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS for more reach.
  • Second lens: a fast prime — a Sony 50mm F1.8 or 85mm F1.8 to start; G Master or Sigma Art to go further.
  • Third lens, only if you need it: a 70-200mm for events and sport, or a 200-600mm for birds and wildlife.

Full-frame or APS-C — which lenses fit your camera?

Sony's full-frame cameras (a7, a7R, a7S, a1, a9, FX3) and its smaller APS-C cameras (a6400, a6700, ZV-E10, FX30) all use the same E mount. Full-frame (FE) lenses work on both; on APS-C they frame tighter, roughly like 1.5 times the focal length. APS-C lenses (marked E, DC or APS-C) are made for the smaller sensor; on a full-frame body the camera switches to an APS-C crop.

G Master, G and the third-party lines

Sony sorts its lenses into tiers: G Master (GM) is its top line, G is the step below, and lenses with neither badge make up its standard range. Sigma also uses three lines — Art (optical quality first), Contemporary (smaller and lighter) and Sports (long lenses for action). Tamron, Viltrox, Sirui, Samyang, Thypoch, TTArtisan and Laowa each make lenses built for the Sony E mount. A higher tier usually means better optics and build; a third-party lens is the right choice when it is brighter, lighter or simply a better fit for how you shoot.

One lens for most things — standard zooms

If you only buy one: the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II, or the Sigma 24-70mm F2.8 DG DN II Art for the same range. Want one lens for trips? The Sigma 20-200mm or the Tamron 25-200mm.

Frequently asked questions

Which Sony lens should I buy first?

A standard zoom: the Sony FE 24-70mm F2.8 GM II if you shoot events and paid work, or the Sony FE 24-105mm F4 G OSS for travel and everyday reach. For a small, simple start, a 50mm F1.8 prime gives a soft background and works well in low light.

Do Sigma, Tamron and Viltrox lenses autofocus on Sony cameras?

Yes — the autofocus lenses in this guide are made for the Sony E mount and focus automatically on Sony bodies. Manual-focus lenses, such as the TTArtisan 10mm F2 and some cine lenses, do not. For your exact camera, check the lens maker's compatibility list.

Can I use a full-frame lens on my APS-C Sony camera?

Yes. FE lenses fit and work on APS-C bodies such as the a6700, ZV-E10 and FX30. The picture looks about 1.5 times tighter, so a 50mm lens frames like a 75mm.

Can I use an APS-C lens on a full-frame Sony camera?

Yes. The lens fits, and the camera switches to an APS-C crop, so it uses a smaller part of the sensor and you get fewer megapixels.

What is the difference between Sony G Master, G and other Sony lenses?

G Master (GM) is Sony's top line, made for the highest resolution and the smoothest background blur. G is the step below. Lenses without either badge are Sony's standard range, usually smaller and simpler.

What do Art, Contemporary and Sports mean on Sigma lenses?

They are Sigma's three lines. Art puts optical quality first, Contemporary keeps lenses smaller and lighter, and Sports covers long lenses built for action and wildlife.

Where can I see the price and availability?

On each lens's product page. Prices there include VAT; delivery is not included. Each product page shows live availability.

Can I pay in installments?

Yes. In-house installments for Omani nationals aged 18 or over, on carts from 200.000 OMR, with management approval — you apply at checkout. Everyone else can use a Bank Muscat or Meethaq credit-card plan.

Where can I try a lens in Muscat?

At our Al Khoud showroom (Al Khoud Oasis Complex, shop 103). Message us on WhatsApp first and we will check which lenses are in.
