Canon EOS R8 Mark II vs R8: What's New, and Should You Wait?

Every real change from the original R8 — and why the R8 in stock today still makes sense

Wait for the R8 Mark II, or start shooting with the R8 today?

Canon EOS R8 full-frame mirrorless camera

Canon announced the EOS R8 Mark II on 15 September 2026. It keeps the same 24.2MP full-frame sensor as the R8 and adds in-body stabilisation (up to 7.5 stops), an AF joystick and a deeper burst buffer. Canon's US price is USD 1,899 for the body, shipping from late October 2026; the Oman price is not announced yet. The original R8 shares the same sensor, the same uncropped 4K 60p video and the same 40 fps burst — and it is in stock in Muscat today at 419.000 OMR including VAT, with in-house installments available when you check out on our website.

The short answer

  • Wait for the Mark II if you film handheld with lenses that have no stabilisation, or you want a joystick to move the focus point fast.
  • Buy the R8 today if you want the same sensor and video quality now, in a lighter body, without waiting for stock or an Oman price.

What's new in the R8 Mark II

  • In-body stabilisation: 5-axis IBIS rated up to 7.5 stops in the centre and 7.0 at the edges, working together with lens stabilisation. The R8 has no in-body stabiliser.
  • AF joystick: an 8-way multi-controller next to the viewfinder. The R8 does not have one.
  • Longer bursts: about 30% more RAW and 58% more JPEG shots in one continuous burst than the R8.
  • Register People Priority: save up to 10 faces and the autofocus follows them first in a crowd.
  • Side card door: the SD card now has its own door on the side. On the R8 it sits in the battery compartment under the camera.
  • Faster wireless: Wi-Fi 6 on 2.4 and 5 GHz, plus Bluetooth 5.3.
  • Simpler controls: the photo/video switch is now combined with the power switch.

Why the R8 is still a smart buy today

Most of what makes the R8 Mark II's pictures look good comes from its sensor, and the R8 already has that sensor. You get the same full-frame image quality, the same uncropped 4K 60p video and the same 40 fps burst, in a lighter body you can take out today. RF lenses with built-in stabilisation still stabilise on the R8, and the camera also has digital movie stabilisation for video.

The Canon EOS R8 body is in stock at our Al Khoudh showroom and online for 419.000 OMR including VAT.
