Already know the 70-200 f/2.8? Here is what the Z version changes — and which one to buy.
The Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM Z is the second RF-mount version of Canon's professional 70-200mm f/2.8 zoom, announced in October 2024. Compared with the original RF 70-200mm F2.8 L IS USM from 2019, it keeps the same focal range and constant f/2.8 aperture and changes how the lens works for video and long reach: the zoom is now internal, so the lens stays 199 mm long from 70 to 200mm; it takes Canon's RF 1.4x and 2x extenders across the whole zoom, reaching 400mm; it adds an iris ring and support for the PZ-E2 power zoom adapter; and close-up magnification rises from 0.23x to 0.3x. It comes in white or black. At Skyorbits it costs 1,149.000 OMR including VAT, with in-house installments for eligible customers.

The short answer
- Get the Z if you film video, shoot on a gimbal or rig, want to reach 400mm with an extender, or shoot close-up details.
- The original RF 70-200 F2.8 still makes sense if you shoot stills only and want to spend less: 929.000 OMR including VAT — availability is on its product page.
What's new in the Z
- Internal zoom: the lens stays 199 mm long from 70 to 200mm, so its balance never shifts on a gimbal or rig. The original's barrel extends as you zoom.
- RF extenders: with the RF 1.4x it becomes 98–280mm at f/4; with the RF 2x, 140–400mm at f/5.6 — autofocus and image stabilisation still work. The original does not take RF extenders.
- Built for video: a dedicated iris ring for smooth aperture changes, support for Canon's PZ-E2 power zoom adapter, and minimal focus breathing.
- Closer focus: 0.3x magnification and focus from 0.49 m at 70mm, up from 0.23x and 0.7 m on the original.
- Stabilisation: optical IS up to 5.5 stops, and up to 7.5 stops in the centre with a camera that has in-body stabilisation.
- White or black: the original came in white only. The white Z carries Canon's heat-shield coating.
- 11 aperture blades and an 82 mm filter thread, up from 9 blades and 77 mm.
What Canon says

“Its iris ring enables fine-tuned video recording and its compatibility with power zoom adapters makes it a strong addition for video production needs.”

Frequently asked questions
What is the price of the Canon RF 70-200mm F2.8 Z in Oman?
1,149.000 OMR including VAT at Skyorbits, the same for white and black. Live availability is on the product page.
Is the Z worth the upgrade from the original RF 70-200 F2.8?
Yes if you film video, work on a gimbal, or want 400mm with an extender — those are the changes the original cannot match. For stills only, the upgrades matter less, and the original costs 929.000 OMR.
Do my 77 mm filters fit the Z?
No. The Z takes 82 mm filters; the original RF 70-200 F2.8 uses 77 mm.
Can I use RF extenders with the original RF 70-200 F2.8?
No. Extender support is new on the Z, where autofocus and stabilisation keep working with both the 1.4x and the 2x.
Are the extenders or the power zoom adapter included?
No. The RF extenders and the PZ-E2 power zoom adapter are sold separately.
Which cameras does it fit?
Any Canon EOS R mirrorless camera (RF mount). On an APS-C body such as the EOS R7, R10 or R50, it frames like a 112–320mm lens.
How heavy is the Z, and is it weather sealed?
About 1.1 kg — Canon lists 1,115 g for white and 1,110 g for black, without the tripod mount — and it is dust and moisture resistant.
Can I pay in installments?
Yes. In-house installments for Omani nationals aged 18 or over, on carts from 200.000 OMR, with management approval; a Bank Muscat or Meethaq credit-card plan for everyone else.
Where can I buy the Canon RF 70-200 Z in Muscat?
At Skyorbits: order on our website, or visit our Al Khoud showroom (Al Khoud Oasis Complex, shop 103). In-stock items are normally delivered in one to two working days across Oman.
