Fast glass (f/2.8 or brighter). A bright lens lets in more light and blurs a busy hall behind the graduate. A 24-70mm f/2.8 covers most of the day; a 70-200mm f/2.8 reaches the stage from your seat.
Flash — on and off camera. A bounce flash saves dark indoor group shots; an off-camera light with a softbox turns a corner into a paid portrait booth.
Two bodies. Stage moments happen once. A second body — one wide, one long — means you never miss the walk because you were changing a lens.
Backups — cards and batteries. There is no re-shoot for a graduation. Carry spare charged batteries and more than one card, and shoot to two cards when the body allows.
