Wadi Darbat, Ayn Athum, Al Mughsayl, Jabal Samhan — the gear that actually matches each one.
Khareef Salalah drew a record 1,070,738 visitors in 2025 — but most travel guides give photographers one throwaway line: "bring a waterproof camera." Here's the gear that actually matches each of Dhofar's four signature spots, and why. Planning what to protect it with? See our Khareef camera-humidity guide.
Quick verdict
| Location | What Khareef does to it | Shoot it with |

| Al Mughsayl | Blowholes, coastal spray, wind | Waterproof action cam + wind-cut mic |
| Jabal Samhan | Fog, cliffs, panoramic viewpoints | Stabilized handheld + drone (where permitted) |
Location by location
What each spot actually does to your gear, and what to bring instead of guessing.
Wadi Darbat — waterfalls and boat shots
Peak Khareef turns Darbat into flowing waterfalls, lakes, and green hills — the single most-photographed spot in Dhofar. Long-exposure shots of the falls need a variable ND filter to cut the light without over- or under-exposing; if you're on a boat or near spray, shoot on something waterproof.
Ayn Athum — the fog-wrapped waterfall
A famous seasonal cascade through mist and greenery, reached by a walking trail that's often wet and uneven. A small stabilized camera you can carry one-handed beats a bulky rig here.
Al Mughsayl — blowholes and coastal wind
Waves crash into cliffs and blow spray meters into the air — dramatic, and hard on gear. Waterproofing matters most here, and coastal wind will ruin audio on any vlog-style clip unless it's cut at the mic.
Jabal Samhan — fog, cliffs, and the big view
Dhofar's highest range, reached by a foggy mountain road, opens onto panoramic views over the whole coastline. Handheld stabilization keeps footage smooth on the drive and at the viewpoint; where flying is permitted, this is the one spot worth the drone.
⚠️ Confirm with Oman's Civil Aviation Authority before flying any drone in Dhofar — rules vary by site.
