Worth it if your lens shows older than Ver.03: the package also carries Sony's earlier AF and stabilisation improvements. Already on Ver.03? The only new part is for the a9 III. Sony has a separate procedure for the PXW-FS7M2, UMC-S3C, UMC-S3CA and ILME-FR7.

How to update

  1. Check the lens version: attach the lens and, on the camera, open MENU > Setup > Version. Sony: Ver.03 or earlier needs the update.
  2. Download the Lens System Software Updater for Windows or Mac from Sony's page (button below). On a Mac, also install Sony's Sony Camera Driver first (Sony lists it as required on its Mac page). Sony lists the supported Windows and macOS versions on its page: check yours first.
  3. Use a battery with three bars or more (or Sony's AC adaptor) and detach the vertical grip. With the lens on the camera and the camera off, start the updater, then turn the camera on.
  4. On the camera, set USB Connection to Mass Storage, take the memory card out, and connect the camera to the computer with its supplied USB cable. Follow the updater's steps.
  5. When the camera shows "Lens update complete", disconnect the cable, turn the camera off, take the battery out and put it back, and turn it on.

Don't remove the battery during the update. Sony's memory-card version of this lens update is for the ILCE-7RM6 only. Sony's downloads list may show a newer date for this file: that is a re-listing, not a new version.
