Canon EOS R5 firmware update
Update, but read this firstWhat's new
- Fixes certain CFexpress cards sometimes failing to format in the camera.
- Fixes the camera sometimes failing to update its firmware over the internet even when a newer version is on Canon's servers.
- Coming from older than 2.2.0, you also get 2.2.0: a password must be set at first setup (with a history of changes to the password, network and other settings), firmware updates over the internet, EDSDK/CCAPI support, protecting images when you rate them, CFexpress cards up to 8 TB, Peripheral Coordinated Control with the RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM (stills only), two Err70 fixes and a fix for HDMI output stopping for a moment with [Screen Off].

Update, but read this first
Read first: coming from a version older than 2.2.0, Canon's 2.2.0 security change comes too: you must set a password.
How to update
- Download firmware 2.2.1 for the EOS R5 from Canon's page (button below) and unzip it. The folder also has Canon's own instructions (PDF).
- Format (initialise) a memory card in the camera, then copy only the firmware file (EOSR5221.FIR) to the top level of the card, not inside a folder. Canon: unneeded or old firmware files on the card can make the update fail.
- Before the update, remove the lens, any external Speedlite and all other accessories from the camera. Insert a fully charged battery and the card. If your camera has two card slots, insert only one card.
- Turn the camera on, set the shooting mode to P, press MENU and choose [Firmware Ver.X.X.X] in the Set-up tab. Select [OK] and follow the screen to start the update.
- Don't turn the camera off, open the card slot cover or press any buttons until the update has finished (on some models the "Update is complete" screen doesn't appear). Afterwards, format the card again before you use it.
Canon's own step-by-step instructions are the PDF inside the download: if they differ from these steps, follow Canon's PDF.
Canon's note (with version 2.2.0): CFexpress cards larger than 2 TB can't be used for a firmware update.
