Update now
Worth it for video. The stills improvement works with the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II.
How to update
- Download the lens firmware from Canon's page (button below). It has the firmware file (RF049110.afu) and Canon's own update instructions (PDF).
- Format (initialise) a memory card in the camera, then copy the firmware file to the top level of the card with a card reader.
- Remove any extender from the lens. Put the card in a compatible EOS R camera, mount the lens, turn the camera on and set the shooting mode to P, Tv, Av or M.
- Press MENU, choose [Firmware Ver.X.X.X] in the Set-up tab, select [Lens], then [OK], and follow the screen.
- Use a fully charged battery or Canon's AC adapter. During the update don't turn the camera off, open the card slot cover, press any buttons or remove the lens.
- When it is done, turn the camera off, take the battery out, wait at least two seconds, put it back and turn the camera on. Format the card before you use it again.
Canon: RF lens firmware can't be updated with EOS Utility.
